How to Choose a Cold Plunge: Tubs, Chillers, and What Actually Matters

A cold plunge only works if you actually use it. The best one for you is the one that stays cold, stays clean, and fits your routine without becoming a chore. Here is what to weigh before you buy.

The three main types

  • Ice baths: a tub you fill with water and ice. Least expensive, but you're buying and hauling ice for every session, and changing the water often.
  • Portable plunges: inflatable or collapsible tubs that set up quickly and pack away. Great for apartments or for testing whether cold exposure sticks. Many can be paired with a chiller later.
  • Chilled plunge tubs: insulated tubs with a chiller that holds your target temperature, usually with filtration and sanitation. The highest upfront cost and the least daily effort.

What to look for in a chiller

If you want cold on demand without ice, the chiller is the heart of the system.

  • Minimum rated temperature: check how cold the chiller can take the water, and remember that performance drops in hot weather.
  • Capacity vs. tub volume: an undersized chiller for a large tub will struggle to reach and hold temperature. Match the chiller to the water volume.
  • Climate: an outdoor plunge in a hot summer climate needs more cooling capacity than an indoor plunge in a basement.
  • Noise and placement: chillers have fans and compressors. Consider where it sits and how close it is to bedrooms or neighbors.

Keeping the water clean

Water quality determines how often you drain and refill. Look for:

  • A filtration system with easy-to-replace cartridges
  • Sanitation such as ozone or UV, depending on the model
  • A well-fitting insulated cover to keep debris out and hold temperature

Even with good filtration, follow the manufacturer's schedule for water changes and treatment.

Insulation matters more than you think

A well-insulated tub and a tight cover mean the chiller works less, the water stays at temperature longer, and your running costs stay lower. It's one of the easiest specs to overlook and one of the most important.

Indoor or outdoor?

  • Indoor: stable temperatures make it easier to hold your target. Plan for water weight on the floor, drainage, and a nearby GFCI-protected outlet.
  • Outdoor: choose a model rated for outdoor use, with freeze protection if you live somewhere cold, and put it on a level, stable base near a drain and power.

Size and access

Check the interior dimensions against your height so you can sit comfortably submerged to your shoulders. Consider how easy it is to get in and out, especially when you're cold. Steps and entry rails make a real difference.

Delivery

Larger plunge tubs usually ship by LTL freight with curbside delivery, so plan for help moving the tub into place. See our Shipping Policy for details.

Cold water immersion is not right for everyone. If you have a heart condition, high blood pressure, Raynaud's, or another medical condition, or you are pregnant, talk with your doctor before starting. Never plunge alone, and start with short sessions.
